About Najman Web

Najman Web was started by Chris Najman in 2002. A sideways move into computer graphics after a successful fine art career led to his first forays into web design. See his Online CV |  for background details.

About this web site

In building and designing this site, we decided to employ all our knowledge of accessibility techniques and web standards so it could serve as a model for our customers.

Site features include :

  • 'alt' (alternative) text for all images
  • titles for all links and headers

This means that if you put your cursor over any link or header on a page a 'tooltip' appears. This is an aid to people using eg, text-only browsers, and also provides extra information for search engines.

Browser / Platform tests

We've already tested the site on a number of browers (see right column).

Other platform and browser tests, as well as usability tests, have been performed by Independent-Testers.org | , a company we test all our sites with. We have considered and acted upon most of the suggestions outlined in their report.

About the labels at the foot of every page on this site

WAI-AAA |

Level Triple-A conformance icon, W3C-WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0

This shows that this site has fulfilled Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) level AAA. The WAI is a program for achieving internationally recognised standards for accessibility. They publish detailed guidelines for reaching A, AA and AAA levels.

Briefly,
to reach level A -
“A Web content developer must satisfy [ level A ] checkpoints.
Otherwise, one or more groups will find it impossible to access information in the document. Satisfying these checkpoints is a basic requirement for some groups to be able to use Web documents.”

to reach level AA -
“A Web content developer should satisfy [ level AA ] checkpoints.
Otherwise, one or more groups will find it difficult to access information in the document. Satisfying these checkpoints will remove significant barriers to accessing Web documents.”

to reach level AAA -
“A Web content developer may address [ level AAA ] checkpoints.
Otherwise, one or more groups will find it somewhat difficult to access information in the document. Satisfying these checkpoints will improve access to Web documents.”

Note: in order to reach level AA you have first to satisfy level A requirements, etc.

Najman Web can build your site to any of these levels, according to customer requirement.

For a full list of checkpoints please see WAI full checkpoint list|

ICRA |  - (Internet Content Rating Association)

ICRA label

This label shows that the site is safe for all viewers. Many companies and individuals now use software to filter sites - this software will read your ICRA rating and allow access to your site.

SafeSurf |

SafeSurf label

This label is similar to the one above - but issued by safeSurf, a similar internet content rating organisation.

Note: there's no requirement for you to display any of these labels on your site.

Why doesn't this site use pop-up windows for linking to external sites?

Three reasons -
1. The structural code used to build this site is XHTML 1.0 (strict version) - which doesn't allow pop-up windows.
2. WAI level AAA doesn't allow pop-up windows - (actually, it's a level AA accessibility requirement).
3. Last, but not least, pop-up windows can be very annoying. More and more companies and individuals are using special software to 'kill' pop-up windows as they appear.
